Hello World

Hello All. I decided to start a new website to document my adventures in ham radio. I’ve run a few blogs in the past on Wordpress but it’s a big slow beast especially when you start collecting plugins and the list of vulnerabilities is endless. I grew tired of running a 6 core AMD with 12GB of memory just to serve up my ramblings so decided to go back to flat HTML. Initially I started writing my own tool to generate a site from a bunch of bash scripts but I quickly got bored and wanted to spend more time with my then girlfriend.

Anyway that was about a year ago and the world has moved on. I dumped my girlfriend and got a new job working with some interesting technologies with a bunch of folks who are introducing me to a whole new world I never knew existed. We’d spoken about running personal sites and a few others expressed similar opinions to myself and mentioned a few tools i’d not come across before. I didn’t have the time to look into starting something up there and then so it’s been in the back of my mind for a while and one slack afternoon before Christmas I decided to have a look around and see what tools are available.

The tool I’m using right now is called Hugo. It’s a static site generator written in go. It’s a command line and text exitor based thing so it’s all vim and bash for me just as I like it. It seems pretty well made and should take away a lot of the pain of building my own tools.

I’ll see how this goes. I’ve not written regularly for some years but still find it therapeutic every now and then. Also it gives me a place to dump all my thoughts and document my projects so I know what I’ve done when I come back to them in months or years time having forgotten the reasons for my design decisions. These musings may be of use to someone out there but I’m mostly just writing for me. Feel free to drop me a message if you have any questions about the stuff I publish here.
